I have written about bands for a long time now. Sometimes it is easy to fall into a groove and write things like “they’re a mix between…” or “their sound is similar to…” and just slip into a mini-coma and hit submit. This isn’t a knock on the bands, it’s just an easy thing to do when talking about music. But on occasion, someone comes along and forces you to pay attention and makes you want to write a million words. Thao and the Get Down Stay Down are one of those bands that demands attention through a unique mix of genres, occasionally unconventional instruments and pure talent.
Led by the airy, yet intense vocals and powerhouse instrumentals of indie rock stalwart Thao Nguyen (also from Thao + Mirah), Thao and the Get Down Stay Down have been active since their days together at the College of William & Mary. Their decade-long run as a band has seen them collaborate with artists such as Joanna Newsom, Merrill Garbus and 80/35 vet Andrew Bird and on stages all over the world including Coachella, Austin City Limits and Iowa’s own Mission Creek Festival. Their most recent album, “A Man Alive,” was released in early March to rave reviews with Pitchfork giving it an “8.0” and Paste Magazine saying “’A Man Alive’ is an endearing listen and has all of the elements of a complete work.” This summer, get down with the music and check out Thao and the Get Down Stay Down.
