"Whose world is this?"
It's Nas’ world. Nasty Nas. Nas Escobar. Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones. The Brooklyn rapper will put Des Moines in a New York State of mind when he headlines the 2016 80/35 music festival.
Nas burst onto the scene in 1994 with the classic “Illmatic,” which helped revive the New York rap scene after years of west coast domination. The album’s enduring hits include “The World is Yours,” “One Love” and “Halftime.”
From there, Nas unleashed 1996’s “It was Written,” debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard chart and spawning hits like “If I Ruled the World” and “Street Dreams.” Around the same time he also formed the hip hop super-group The Firm with Foxy Brown, AZ, Cormega and later, Nature.
His roster of hits also includes “Hate Me Now,” “Got Ur Self A…,” “Nas is Like” and “I Can.” He's also made guest appearances on hits for Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey and numerous other acts.
Nas released his 11th album “Life is Good,” in 2012 and at this year’s SXSW debuted a new track, “The Sickness.” The rapper is planning to release “The Lost Tapes 2” in 2016, the long-awaited sequel to 2002’s “The Lost Tapes.”
