Performing: Friday, July 8 at 7:00 pm on Hy-Vee Main Stage
Lotus is interesting. They fit right in with the jam aesthetic, with their easy to sway to melodies and their expansive, purely instrumental works, but there’s something about them that eschews the typical “crunchiness” of jam. Sure, they mix soul and funk and rock and folk and all the usual, but they’re also somehow atypical. With an occasional mix of synths, and dose of sampling, they fit in as well at the sweaty fields of Bonnaroo (which they’ve played) to the downtown Miami electronica of Ultra (which they’ve also played).
Formed in 2001, Lotus has seen their popularity rise on a grassroots level. With a dozen albums (including live and out of print releases) over fifteen years as a band, Lotus has been known to experiment with sounds all across the boards. Their popularity has sent them around the world and on stages like the aforementioned Bonnaroo and Ultra, as well as Outside Lands, Rothbury and in theaters and clubs all over. Sometimes they’re an indie/electronic band at a jam fest, sometimes a jam band at an electronic fest. At 80/35, they get to be all of those things at once.
