Fancy studios. Expensive microphones. New guitar strings. Goldblums crave not these things. Their sound, however, is not born of any DIY pretension; it is rather the conscious conclusion of trying to bring the audience waist-deep into their world. One mic in the center of the room? That’s good enough to get a sound that leaves you stuck forever in a funhouse mirror room run by Gibby Haynes and Lemmy Kilmister.
The Des Moines four-piece, a conglomeration of members from the bands Deep Sleep Waltzing (Jared & Brandon) and VVhite VVomen (James & Kyler) have been nothing short of prolific the past few years, releasing a series of tapes, split releases, and their highly regarded 7” “Gnat Bones” in late 2015.
They call themselves Shapeshifting Reptilian Overlords. Critics call them Garage Fuzz Punk Maestros. You can call them one of the can’t miss artists at this year’s 80/35.
